When we were both 12 I spent a week with my cousin Paul. We collected the eggs every day but hay allergies kept me from the real work. Paul also tried to tell me about girls...
I always regretted that I didn't get to know him as well as I came to know his parents, cousin Margaret and Maurice and his big sisters, Mary, Anne and Ruth who I met from time to time at family picnics - and funerals. His sisters shared the pain of their loss with me at Duncan McKillop's funeral almost 7 years later :(

Paul was my baby brother. When Paul reached the walking and running age, he was someone for me to play with. Paul was there in his older years always lending a helping hand if you needed him. Dear Carol and family, My condolences to you and your family. Each of us have memories of Paul and miss him. I had the pleasure of talking with Paul about our common interests in farm markets. And I enjoyed hearing him being interviewed on CBC about farm issues. I met Paul at the farm when we were both 10 or 11 and he demonstrated to me and my Dad how his automated cattle feeding system worked. (his Dad was away at the time). I got to know him better at 4H conferences and high school. He has always been an articulate, good humoured, capable and thoughtful man. I wanted to send a note of sincere sympathy to the Mistele family at this sad time. I have only worked with the OFA for just over a year now, but have been involved in several aspects of EFA's work over the past several years. I only had the chance to meet Paul a handful of times, but it was clear that he was committed to giving agriculture a voice and had made quite a mark on the agricultural community locally and provincially. I vividly remember the day Paul arrived at the farm. It seemed to take forever for mom and dad to bring our baby brother home. Mary got so excited that she got sick and had to go to bed.Finally the moment arrived. Paul was a beautiful baby - chubby and blond with bright blue eyes. We barely had time to cherish the moment when 4 faces appeared in the kitchen window. Standing on the veranda were the 4 Bakers - Milton, Martha, Lois and Paul. Dad named our Paul after his farming friend and long time neighbour Paul Baker. Paul was meant to live on a farm. He was happiest when he was left in a playpen on the front veranda watching the farm activity. At the tender age of three Paul was dad's constant companion. He was taking in every aspect of farming. His favourite animals were the pigs. He nicknamed them Gully Gunts and loved to watch them squeal when they were fed. He was involved in the corn harvest. Dad would let him ride in the wagon behind the corn picker He never seemed to get hurt. He was busy mapping out his future. I remember when he was very young he picked up a clump of earth and gave me a mini lesson about the fitness of the soil. He used words like texture and temperature. I knew at that moment that Paul had many intellectual layers that I would never understand. Paul was never too happy in the classroom. His education came from all the farm magazines,History books and National Geographics he read. At a very young age he joined dad in running the farm. He had innovative ideas and business savvy He eventually took over and transformed the farm from a struggling business to a financially sound business. Paul was also passionate about his music. I remember he would listen to a song on the radio and then play it back by ear. His teen years included lots of jam sessions with his friends. Paul's happiest moments were his wedding and births of Matthew and Amanda. Life also included working in all the associations he represented. Now Paul the crops are being harvested and the land will rest for the winter. You can also rest after your brave battle this past year. You will always be remembered by all who knew and loved you. Carol and family, I'm both saddened and relieved to hear of Paul's passing. I'm sad because Ontario agriculture has lost a truly great leader - one whose passion was rarely matched. OFAC has also lost one of its biggest supporters and friends. I'm relieved because no one should suffer the way he has suffered in the last year. I've got so many funny and happy stories of Paul in my head tonight as I think back on the time I worked with him and for him. It was an honour to call him a friend and we will miss him greatly. My heartfelt sympathies at Paul's passing. I first met Paul while working at Ontario Pork and always looked forward to his stops into our office while on his way to Toronto. He always had a funny story or a smart comment to brighten the day - or words of wisdom for someone in her first job out of university. I remember when I first saw my cousin Paul – a cute even-tempered baby with lots of smiles and a very good appetite. He and his family were visiting Aunt Leona (Mistele) Williams and I recall his sister, Mary, caring for him like a little Mother. She was feeding him a large bowl of pablum. Baby Paul ate with gusto but refused the last bite. To my horror, Mary ate it. (I remain in awe of her to this very day). Paul was a lucky baby – three doting sisters. His parents were delighted – we all were. My mother, Margaret Mistele Brown took care of Paul when he was ten years old. I think Aunt Margaret was in the hospital. Paul had a cold and, as Mother nursed him, they developed a nice attachment to each other. Paul matured into a man of integrity, kindness, and industriousness. He adored his wife and children; he worked hard on the farm; he was passionate about representing the farming profession for the province of Ontario. His love for life, family and community was a major contribution for God in this world. I pray that God, the Source of all goodness as revealed to us through Christ Jesus, will continue to fill, surround, and protect Carol, Matthew, Mandy, Aunt Margaret, Mary, Anne, and Ruth. Amen. Carol, Matt and Amanda, Laurie and I would like to express our deepest condolences to you in this time of loss. Paul was a special man; a good father, a fine representative of the agricultural community that he cared about so much, always quick with a smile and a kind word. I will miss his infectious sense of humour. He always had a good story to tell and would tell it with such enthusiasm and at great length. Since I have moved to BC, it has always a treat for me to stop in there when I got the chance ..... Paul and I, over a couple of beers, could pick up right where we left off with the last conversation that we had started. He was a man of strong conviction and did a lot for his community and for the farmers of Ontario through the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. In recent years, even though we have not been close due to physical distance and different lives, my life has been made richer by knowing him. I will miss him greatly. Matt & Amanda, As a summer student at OFAC, I was fortunate enough to spend many days with your Dad at the Pork Congress and the Ex. I will always remember his infectious grin and the passion with which he spoke to "the city people" about agriculture. However, in the quiet moments at the booth, he never spoke about OFAC or pigs. Over my years at OFA I have seen a number of leaders, and have always thought we were lucky to attract such outstanding people. And among them, Paul stood out as special. Carol and Family. It has been a difficult year for those of us who knew and cared for Paul. He was a successful Father, Farmer and Spokesperson who cared passionately for each endeavour. I remember helping Maurice at Planting and harvest time with Paul tagging along. PM'er as I called him always had the big smile and the big welcome. Carol, Paul was a generous and sensitive man who enriched many lives. He was a friend, at times almost a brother – never out of our thoughts through these many difficult months. I can't think of Paul without smiling, even through the tears of loosing him. I remember Paul and I headed into the executive committee meeting, both having been summoned so the meeting could start. I caught his eye in the hall and I heard him laugh as and we both dashed into the room, racing to see who could be first to their chair because neither wanted to be the “last one” to get to the table. I can still hear him laugh as we scrambled to our chairs. Ron Bonnett was OFA President at the time and Ron just smiled and shook his head. The years on OFA Executive committee with Paul were some very special years. I remember sitting at the OFA exec table in Toronto watching a snow storm come in, worried that it might get bad before I left for my cousin’s funeral in Peterborough. I remember Paul leaning over, putting his hand on my arm and saying “leave now, get there before the storm, don’t worry about staying here”. He was right. An hour later the roads were almost impassable. I remember how he used to make Deb Lethbridge laugh. I know he missed Deb, as we all do. I have to believe in an afterlife – I can’t justify this life without one. And wherever heaven is I know it is filled with laughter, Paul and Deb’s rising above them all. The memories I tell here are very small stories in the many you will hear about Paul. But they typify his humour, his compassion, his enjoyment of life. I know how much time OFA takes us away from our families. Thank you, and your family, for sharing Paul with all of us. We are better for having known him. Bette Jean Crews
