My memories of Stu ... I was on a student engineering team with 'The Car that Stu Built' and a Friend of Stu, who personally shared that I was a 'Post hole Digger' just like him!
I first met Stu when he made me feel special as an engineer at Queen's University. He helped our Mini Baja team to design and build our competition car from state-of-the-art materials, in a state-of-the-art facility with rock star Stu providing full behind-the-scenes access to Kingston's Alcan research and manufacturing plant. He made this available to a bunch of newbie engineers and I cherish this as my first 'real world' engineering experience. That car in the photo I shared was way ahead of its time. It used aluminum alloys that Ford would choose years later for their vehicles. Thank you Stu!
Later I would enjoy spending time at Pen Lake and sitting beside Stu at the dinner table. A great spot to be and much to absorb as you all know! Stu made me laugh and there are many one-liners I can't fully recall but I do remember him sharing as he asked about me, that we were both PhDs - you know what a PhD is Mike? A Post hole Digger, lol. Thanks Stu!
Sending our love to the entire family - Mike, Kim, Ella and Max.

Judy and Family please accept our heartfelt condolences for Stuart’s passing.
While you lived in Deep River and Point Alexander we enjoyed the occasional bridge games and watching Stuart’s glee when a finesse worked. We enjoyed chats exchanging experiences on canoe trips seeing the delight in his eye when he recalled a special victory over a set of rapids. While at AECL we worked together on trying to understand in-reactor creep of pressure tubes. This led to organizing an international conference with Graham Carpenter. The population of Deep River tittered when they saw the destination on the AECL buses carrying the delegates was “CREEP”. Being a metallurgist, Stuart was very good at exploiting neutrons to understand the strain behaviour of crystals – very important for creep and later for hydrogen effects. Of course, he was also excellent at handling ancient materials, his mastery of wood was legendary culminating in the house in Point Alexander. We lost touch on technical subjects when he changed favourite elements from Zirconium to Aluminum. The visits back to the Ottawa Valley and latterly our visits to Penn Lake were highlights of our summers; we will miss him.

Dear Judy and family:
We send our deepest condolences on the passing of Stuart. We came to Deep River in 1973 and I started a Post Doc fellowship working with Stuart. He guided me through my introduction to the nuclear industry and working with zirconium. He gave me a very good grounding and I continued in that industry for over 30 years. Kelta and I remember and appreciate your hospitality which truly helped us settle into our new environment. Sincerely, Ron and Kelta Fleck

Dear Judy and family
It is a sad day to hear that Stu has passed away. Stu was the one who gave me the chance to spend 22 wonderful years at the Chalk River Labs. He heard a talk I gave as a graduate student at a Kingston conference where he was one of the judges, and afterwards, he invited my wife and I to come and present my research findings. Stu and Brian Cox were so hospitable that it made an impression on both of us. When he suggested that I apply for a job there, we did not have any hesitation in accepting it.
I had the privilege of working with Stu and being mentored by him. Judy and Stu invited us many a time to their place in Point Alexander, where we came to know them socially. These were some of the best memories we still carry about our time in Deep River, where we also raised our two children. I should also mention that Stu was very well respected as a scientist, and I personally benefited greatly from working with him. He will sadly be missed. Judy, please accept our sincere condolences at these difficult times. Rest in peace, Stu.

To Judy and family,
I am very sorry for your loss. Stuart and I were colleagues for many years, beginning with his mentorship during my final undergraduate year at U of T when he was doing his Ph.D. research, and then many years working in similar fields at Chalk River. Although the last time we spoke was 20 years ago – we had lunch soon after I came to Kingston in 2002, I still remember many of our conversations, often work related, but also about recreational and domestic activities. He had a habit of referring to his friends and colleagues by their given names, even when I did not know them. Stuart coined an expression relating to canoeing in Algonquin, which I still tell people about today, and attribute to him. To describe a long portage leading away from a road access point, where one would find empty beer bottles and other assorted garbage at the bottom, but not at the top or beyond, Stuart used the term “a*sh*le filter” – so appropriate. Rest in peace, Stuart, and enjoy the waters above those long portages.

Judy and familly, your French friends from Paris are missing Stuart and his "joie de vivre" already. What a gift to us to have so many good memories with Stuart at the cottage, sharing and transmitting his passion for "portage" across your beautiful country. We are deeply sorry about the loss of such a great person and are thinking about you all at this difficult moment. Sending you all our love.
