Frank was one of a kind, determined, intelligent, wise, tough, proud, friendly, had integrity, compassion, good moral character and loved life getting the most from it but also contributing all he could to it. He and Elsie had true love and this could be seen always. I met Frank when he and Elsie took the motorcycle course at Fanshawe College. They were a couple that stood out from the crowd wherever they went. Frank came back later for advanced training on motorcycles once they had travelled by bike throughout the country. He wanted to refine his riding skills so they'd always get the most out of touring, and be safe. We became good friends and rode motorcycle together with Frank going on some longer road trips with us. We were young and eager and I recall Frank telling me one time that he loved to ride and could stick it out 24 hours a day if necessary (we did lots of riding in the mountains and rugged parts of the USA without much sleep) then added but for heavens sake I do need to eat sometimes. We had fallen a little short on the restaurant stops but Frank brought us back to reality. We had friends on Capital Police in Washington DC and Frank enjoyed the comradery that this brought as well as the trips and historical sites we visited.
I can see Frank saying not to be sorry that he's gone because he lived a full life, because he did; and I'm happy to have been a part of it.
Elgin Austen

It is with both sadness and joy that I write this message to Elsie and her family. Sadness that Frank is no longer here, and joy in knowing Frank. Our Carefree memories will always include the Van Brees! Frank diligently worked at Carefree solving drainage issues, while Elsie made sure that the BOD’s accounting practices were always correct. We’ve missed both of them since they left, but we enjoyed seeing them when we visited Canada. We thank you for your friendship!

We were honoured to know Frank and Elsie through my parents Tom and Edith Hansen and the time they and we shared at Carefree Country Club. While it was sad to see them leave Carefree we knew that Frank would cope with cold weather because of his love for big boy toys, and knew that he would take to snow-blowing like a duck to a frozen pond, no doubt to the consternation of Elsie and their children.
My father was a WWll veteran and was involved in the liberation of Holland so there was a natural affinity. Frank and Elsie were post-war immigrants to Canada. They embraced their new country with heart and soul, and they did the same when they went to Carefree in 1988. They contributed thirty years to the well-being of Carefree.
Frank worked tirelessly on improving the irrigation of the golf course which in the early years was mired in mud on most holes after a light rain. If you did not see Frank on the tractor or at the maintenance building, you had to assume he was in the hospital. Frank and the tractor were rarely separated. It is hard to fathom the number of hours they worked on behalf of Carefree and no doubt in their community of Forest as well. Frank was never at a loss for words when it came to the pride and admiration of Elsie and his family. May your wonderful memories of time together bring you comfort in your time of sorrow.
