+ 1
My dad passed away early Friday morning at the age of 85, just a few days short of his birthday.
He was a hard but fair man, a self-made electrical engineer who didn't finish high school. He could make something out of nothing using materials at hand, creativity and skill. He had a deep pool of energy, enough to work 630-430 days for CN and still come home and run our farm, fix whatever I broke (!) and maintain his close network of friends and family.
He supported me through some good and not so good ideas and left with me my work ethic, my moral code and my iron will. Although he never saw me compete in CrossFit or weightlifting he was always glad to hear of how I did and liked to see photos and videos of the day.
He and my mom celebrated their 60th anniversary in March 2020, and were together several years before that. In an age of disposable relationships they are a beacon of days gone by when people took their vows seriously and worked things out, even if it wasn't always easy.
I shall miss our conversations and the little jobs he always had for me to do, his dry sense of humour, his ability to instantly calculate a cribbage hand flawlessly.
Here is to Mr Floyd Edgar Cable, 1934-2020. @ Strathroy, Ontario

Please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences Pat and Mike. I worked with Floyd back in 1957 on the Signal Gang in Port Credit when he was badly injured at the Cawthra Rd. Crossing. I rode with Floyd in the ambulance to the nearest Hospital. Truck was hit by a train while we were installing gates converting from Flashers. I also worked with Floyd as his Assistant Maintainer at Canpa Tower in 1959-60. It was great and my Brother Bob was also working there as an Operator. Floyd and Bob were also good friends and visited back and forth in those days. My wife Sharon and I visited Floyd and Pat as well in Malton. RIP my CN Friend!

Sorry to hear, Pat and Mike
I first met Floyd on my first day on Signals in Scarboro back in Sept 1956. Stan Gurgacz was temp foreman on Palmers gang.
Floyd was the cook that day, the cook was off. Wieners and beans, then burning some copper outside.
Floyd was at Canpa for a while, I was at queens Wharf. Brother Bob Stein was operator/leverman.
There was a accident in Port Credit, a train hit a dump truck, knocked the box off the truck and hit Floyd, he had a broken leg.
I went to see him in a hospital there somewhere. Ab Young was there when the truck got hit
He and Pat lived in a mobile home in Malton. He went back to home town in Forest, worked at Sarnia as leader

Pat, as you know Floyd and I worked together years ago and enjoyed each others company and knowledge. He was a surprise to me when he showed up at my retirement but did not get much time to talk. I remember our trip to the tobogganing hill very clearly when he screamed at me for turning us to go flying over the little ski jump, way back in the early sixties. My condolences to you, your son and all your family. George & Nancy Stein
