Mike, Brad and Brian, you boys should stand tall knowing that you and your families did everything possible to make life comfortable during your Mother's prolonged illness and your Father's stubbornness.
I think John Byrne's comment about your Dad being like a Swiss army knife for the town hit the nail on the head. That continued after retirement also. He was a great friend and mentor to me. He will be missed big-time in my world.
I recall when we moved here in 1995, a man came down the tracks on a Wheel Horse tractor and asked if I bought that house and what was I going to do with it. He also informed me that, if the 13 pine trees at the back of my yard plugged the storm drain, he would bulldoze them flat. I think we were establishing neighbourhood seniority. He left directly after that, but I didn't catch his name. That lead to a great and lasting friendship.
So sorry for your loss. All the best going forward.

To Alvin's whole family. How very sad I was to hear of Alvin's passing. He was a wonderful man, who loved Olive so much. He was such a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was so kind to all the PSWs who came to care for Olive. He also teased the life out of us!! . He even rescued me once when my car broke down in his driveway, giving me a ride home. I know he will be missed. Please accept my sympathy and love during this difficult time. xoxoxo Debbie Burr

All my sympathy to Alvin's family.
He was a great neighbor with a good sense of humor and always a grin that went along with the teasing. I sure appreciated all the times he cleared my driveway and saved me hours of shoveling.
He will be missed!

Alvin was one of the characters in my life that I am very thankful to have met and worked with. I had the pleasure of working with Alvin for about 10 years when I was the Clerk-Administrator in Forest. What a great guy he was, he had a great sense of humour and was always ready with a wise crack about things that happened but could always be counted on to work hard and make sure residents were happy.
He was the “Swiss Army Knife” of the Public Works Department. There wasn’t a piece of equipment he couldn’t operate and he was the unquestioned master of his back hoe; I used to think he could perform brain surgery with that thing. He could fix pretty much any piece of equipment in the department and could fabricate parts and attachments to make equipment perform things they were not designed to do.
Even many years after he retired, I could count on Alvin’s memory to tell me about drains, and other peculiarities of municipal infrastructure and why things were designed the way they were. He knew it all and kept it all in his head. He was invaluable.
I also remember your Dad as one of the kindest people I knew. Even though he was a big bear of a man he would be so gentle with kids or the elderly and could always charm them with his smile and sense of humour.
When I was forced into a early retirement unexpectedly , Alvin was someone who reached out to console me and welcomed me into the garage to chat about stuff and share some laughs. His reaching out to me meant a lot and said a lot about the the kind of man he was.I will miss him greatly.
With great fondness,
John Byrne
